CURRENT PROGRESS AT HANSON BRICKWORKS, MEASHAM
O'Brien Contractors are currently undertaking work at Hanson Brickworks, Measham, as part of a £4.75million contract with existing client SDC. The Leicestershire-based project involves the construction of a new 'super' brick manufacturing plant for Hanson Building Products. O'Brien's 30-week contract period includes enabling works, installation of large diameter storm drainage, substructures, superstructures and external works. The enabling works, which consisted of the removal, crushing and placing of 20,000m2 of existing hard standings within the site, were completed ahead of programme and successfully used as piling mats for the piling to the foundations. Foundations were completed ahead of programme and the roof was on the building by the end of February, ensuring that no time would be lost due to weather. The substructure works are progressing well, all kiln areas have been handed over to the following contractors and many areas have been handed back to O'Brien for secondary stage concrete. The clay bunkers are progressing well, the sloped floors, which are at 25 Deg presented a challenge but have been completed, and are of a high standard. The first wall pour has taken place and the second is progressing well. The external works are nearing completion, the concrete road is finished and being used during the construction of the brick plant to give access to all areas of the site. Drainage is also nearing completion; the large diameter drain crossing across the public highway outside the site was completed successfully with minimum disruption to the public.
