STAGE 1 - FULL SITE SURVEY

Preliminary Survey

Before any initial planning can take place O’Brien would recommend that a topographical survey is carried out to assess existing levels and to produce a 3D model for pitch formation. This will ensure the most cost effective way is found of producing and constructing the scheme including rationalisation of the specification. Once this has taken place permission from the Local Planning Authority will need to be granted.
STAGE 2- GROUND WORKS

Earthworks

O’Brien uses in-house plant and a highly skilled workforce to ensure all work carried out on site is to the highest standards. Movement of earth is carried out to create a formation of the pitch design.

Drainage

The right drainage is paramount to any sports pitch construction, surface water will be allowed to drain away preventing flooding or damage to the surface of the pitch. Lateral drainage laid across the centre of the pitch and perimeter drainage laid around one or more sides of the facility ensures that all areas of the pitch are able to drain so that frost or water damage does not occur.

Dynamic Base

Once preparation is finished an inert frost-free sub base will be constructed. There are typically two choices; a stone based foundation which is less expensive and commonly used for natural sports pitches, loosely laid it allows free movement, or a tarmac based foundation which is used in the construction of synthetic pitches and is more ridged, therefore more suitable for MUGA.

STAGE 3- SURFACE FINISHES

Shock pad

A shock pad is widely used alongside a macadam base. It is a large layer of expanded polyethylene and sits between the upper playing surface and the base. It has a rough texture and provides grip preventing problems like carpet creep or movement. It also provides comfort to players and improves the playing performance of the pitch.

Surface

There a wide variety of surfaces to choose from, mainly dependant on the type of sport that is to be played:

Macadam Surface - is a durable surface, more suitable for tennis courts and can be played on in most weather conditions.

Polymeric Surface - has a degree of shock absorption, thickness is increased which provides a slip resistant surface suitable for sports such as tennis & netball.

Synthetic Turf Surface - has good durability and performance in extreme wear conditions. Ideally suited to MUGA pitches.

We can install all surfaces so they meet FA regulations and all suppliers have been accredited by UKAS and FIFA, in order to meet all current requirements and legislation.

Infill

Infill is used in conjunction with artificial sports surfaces. There are a few options; granulated rubber, a rubber and sand mix or plastic pellets. Due to the impact these products may have on the environment, we endeavour at all times to meet current legislation and avoid supplying materials that may cause environmental damage.

STAGE 4 - INFRASTRUCTURE

Infrastructure

O’Brien can carry out any infrastructure required; car parking, trees, playing lines, equipment storage, fencing, netting/screening, ball rebound systems, vehicle access and floodlighting, thereby offering total solution packages to suit everyone.
